Root Canals - Root Canal Dentist
Westchester County, Peekskill, Yorktown, New York General Dentistry
A root canal is a common treatment in the practice of general dentistry. The purpose of a root canal is to prevent tooth extraction on a tooth that has become severely decayed or infected. In the center of you tooth there is soft material known as pulp. In the pulp chamber are the blood vessels and connective tissue that nourish your tooth. The nerve of your tooth lies in the root canal, a canal that runs from your tooth root into your pulp chamber.
When the nerve tissue or pulp in your pulp chamber becomes damaged by decay or infection, bacteria quickly begin to multiply. This can lead to infection or a pus-filled pocket that forms at the end of the tooth root called an abscessed tooth. In either case, when this occurs, a root canal becomes essential for alleviating discomfort, and preventing an unnecessary tooth extraction.
Root Canals at Advanced Dentistry of Mohegan Lake
Root canals have a reputation for being painful. With advancements in dental technology however, Westchester County root canal dentists at Advanced Dentistry of Mohegan Lake are able to perform this procedure with minimal to no discomfort.
After taking an x-ray to determine the shape of your root canal, one of our experienced dentists will apply a local anesthetic to ensure maximum comfort around the area requiring treatment. Once you are comfortable, a small access hole is placed in your tooth to allow one of our dentists to gently file debris and infection out of your pulp chamber. Periodically throughout this process, we will flush debris away with water or sodium hydrochloride.
If infection is present in the root canal, our dentist may place medication in the hole and seal it with a temporary filling. This filling will be removed and the root canal will be filled and sealed after one week. If no infection is present, we will fill and seal your root canal on the same day as your procedure.
Our New York dentists perform endodontic procedures on all teeth, including molars. If your root canal is a repeat procedure, we may refer you to an endodontic specialist in our area to help ensure your infection does not reoccur.
If you are suffering from the discomfort of an abscessed or infected tooth in the Westchester County, Peekskill, or Yorktown, New York area, please contact Advanced Dentistry of Mohegan Lake to schedule a root canal consultation today.
