The hard part is over. You’ve found the love of your life, they love you back, and you both have agreed to spend the rest of your life together. You’ve even managed to plan your wedding! Now you’re worried about wedding photos. They mean a lot because you’ll probably show them to friends and family over and over. Not to mention they’ll hang in your room for a long time.

If you’re like many, you’ve probably had this experience: the perfect photographic moment with mountains behind you, the sun setting in the distance, but when you get the photo back, your smile looks awkward. Unnatural and forced. You don’t want your wedding photos to look like that.

Maybe you feel awkward behind the camera or our self-conscious. Regardless, whatever is holding you back from looking your best, practice these four smiling-tips before the big day.

Open Your Eyes

This trick is incredibly simple and effective. Right before the photographer takes a picture, close your eyes then open them slowly, drawing the corners of your mouth into a smile. Not only does this alleviate the awkwardness of being in front of a camera, but opening your eyes moments before a picture is taken produces a look of calm.

Make a Game Out of Ignoring the Camera.

Use your partner to help make a game out pretending the camera isn’t there. Be funny. Shake your head back and forth just before a picture. Turn your lips into a lawn mower. Make sounds or say things that are ridiculous. The purpose is simply to distract yourself. That way, your smile can be more spontaneous and natural.

Exercises for you Face!

Just as stretching loosens you up for a run, facial muscle exercises will loosen up your smile. Next time you have to smile for a photo, try stretching the corners of your mouth while keeping your lips together. Hold the pose for ten seconds then release.

Another useful exercise involves impersonating a rabbit. Wiggle your nose from side to side twenty times or until you feel you cheek muscles become exhausted.

Consider Cosmetic Dentistry

Maybe feeling embarrassed by your teeth is holding you back from smiling. Perhaps they aren’t as white as you wish, or maybe you’ve chipped a tooth due to trauma. Either way, cosmetic dentistry can help. Because teeth can be both an emotional and professional asset, seeking treatment is important for those who feel they need it.

The perfect smile is different for each patient, so scheduling an appointment and discussing your goals with a dentist can help you feel more in control.
