The health and cosmetic benefits of replacing missing teeth cannot be overestimated. Plenty of people want missing teeth replaced because it interferes with their smile, but missing teeth also cause a shift in your bite. As your jawbone shrinks due to the missing tooth or teeth, your existing teeth will move toward the gap. This pulls them from their natural position. Restoring your dental health and smile can be done through dental implants.

At Advanced Dentistry of Mohegan Lake, we understand your smile is important to you. If you are missing more than one tooth, we also understand that eating and speaking may be difficult. The dental implant procedure performed at our Mohegan Lake, New York cosmetic dental practice is just one of many procedures aimed at restoring functionality to your bite.

Dental implants are more than simple replacements for teeth. Losing a tooth means you lose the root, too. They are titanium posts placed within your jaw line to anchor an artificial crown on top of it. This eliminates some of the issues associated with other dental solutions, such as dentures and dental bridges. Dental implants do not slip, do not hurt adjacent teeth, and do not cause discomfort.

Candidates for Dental Implants

Good candidates for dental implants include those who:

  • Are missing one or more teeth
  • Are in good oral health
  • Have a fully grown jawbone
  • Have enough bone in the jaw to secure the implants
  • Are nonsmokers

If you do not have enough bone at the implant site, we can use a bone graft to help secure your dental implants. Smokers can get dental implants, but the failure rates are much, much higher. We recommend you quit smoking during the recovery period for your dental implants, and it's best if you quit smoking permanently if you want to retain your implants.

Dental Implant Procedure

Dental implants are an effective way to restore the function of your mouth without destroying adjacent structure. The entire process will take several months to complete because the bone must heal around the dental implant. For patients who live near Westchester County, Yorktown, or Mohegan Lake, Dr. Sepiashvili will perform the initial exam, the restoration, and the actual procedure. A single restoration may be done in one session, but a full mouth restoration can take four or five visits, depending on the number of replacements.

First, impressions will be taken of the area where the implants will be inserted and an initial design for your artificial teeth is made. Once the dental implant has been placed into your jawbone and your gums have been stitched up, you must wait for it to heal enough so that a temporary crown can be placed on the anchored screw.

The temporary crown will remain in place while your jaw heals around the dental implant, which can take as long as six months. A porcelain crown that matches you natural tooth color will be placed once Dr. Sepiashvili has determined you have healed enough.

This long-lasting procedure can be performed at Advanced Dentistry of Mohegan Lake for those missing one tooth, or eight, ten, or 12 teeth. Dr. Sepiashvili can also place mini-implants.

All-on-4® Implant Dentures

If you've lost all your teeth in either arch (on top or on the bottom), All-on-4® implant dentures offer a less expensive alternative to traditional implant dentures. The procedure can be completed in one day, usually requires no bone graft, and the results are outstanding. So why choose All-on-4® implant dentures? They look great, they can last a long time (98% were still in place at 5-10 year follow-ups), and there's numerous other benefits to All-on-4®. If you are a good candidate, they are a great alternative for implant dentures.
