Missing Teeth? Dr. Sepiashvili discusses how dental implants are the best option.

Understanding How Dental Implants Work

In the simplest of terms, a fixed dental implant is an artificial replacement for anything from a single tooth, multiple teeth, or even a full arch of teeth. Implants replace both the visible part of a tooth, as well as below-the-gum root structures. In fact, implants permanently fuse with the jaw bone, helping to stimulate and preserve the integrity of your facial bone structure.

First, a rigid dental implant post is installed into the gums, which provides a permanent anchoring structure for the placement of one or more artificial teeth. Depending on the specific oral condition of each patient, dental implants can range from single-tooth replacements to full arch restorations.

At Advanced Dentistry of Mohegan Lake, our team offers five types of fixed dental implant procedures: single implants, multiple implants, full arch implants, implant-supported dentures and implant-supported bridges. We also offer state-of-the-art implant technology, including CBCT scanners and intraoral cameras for unparalleled results.

Which Implant Option Is Right For You?

In order to know which dental implant option is right for you, a quick and convenient consultation must be carried out with Dr. Sepiashvili at our office in Mohegan Lake, NY. Every patient’s oral health is unique and must be evaluated prior to the determination of a dental implant solution, as a healthy jawbone is mandatory for placement of fixed implant structures.

Dental implants are far more accessible and affordable than you might think, and in many instances, our expert team can have you on your way to a full, perfect set of teeth in as little as two office visits! We also offer full sedation options, including NuCalm, The Wand anesthesia system, and oral sedation, which make our implant procedures as pain-free as possible.

Single dental implants are often required when injury or blunt-force trauma results in extensive damage to a single tooth. First, a rigid titanium anchor is surgically inserted into the jaw, which provides a permanent foundation for installation of the replacement tooth, which consists of two separate structures: the post and the crown.

Single dental implants can take anywhere from three to six months to fully heal and permanently bond with the jawbone. However, initial healing can take place in as little as two weeks, during which time normal oral hygiene practices like brushing and flossing can be carried out.

Unlike single implants, full arch dental implants replace a full set of missing teeth, and can use anywhere from four to six permanent anchors. Similar to single implants, however, full arch restorations help to provide durability and structural support to the jawbone, lifting and restoring facial features and natural bone structures back to a normal, healthy state.

Full arch dental implants are 100% permanent and do not move or shift over time, making them far superior to other full mouth restoration options like removable dentures. In terms of healing time, full arch implants can take anywhere from three to six months to fuse with the jawbone, with initial healing typically taking place around two to three weeks.

For patients in need of full mouth restoration, NEW YOU DENTURES™ offer an excellent intermediate option – in terms of both cost and functionality – between permanent fixed implants and removable dentures. For most patients, the major benefit of implant-supported dentures is that they are less expensive than full arch implants.

During A NEW YOU DENTURES™ procedure, Dr. Sepiashvili will surgically install four to six fixed implants into the jaw. After three to six months (during which the implants become fused with the jawbone), the patient’s customized set of dentures will be installed. Implant-supported dentures are removable, but only under the supervision and expertise of the dentist. Implant-supported dentures offer many of the same advantages of permanent full arch implants, but at a fraction of the cost!

Implant-supported bridges are another option for fully restoring a patient’s oral architecture in the event of several missing teeth. This option is typically the preferred method when several adjacent teeth are missing and/or in a state of severe decay.

A traditional dental bridge consists of an artificial tooth that is permanently anchored and secured to two dental crowns. An implant-supported bridge, on the other hand, involves placement of an artificial tooth between two crowns that are supported by fixed implants. This provides a far more secure and durable repair compared to a standard dental bridge. Like implant-supported dentures, the major benefit of an implant-supported bridge is that it is far less expensive than full arch implants.

Why Choose Dental Implants Over Traditional Dentures?

Permanent dental implants are far superior to traditional (removable) dentures in a number of ways. While dentures are far more economical in terms of the initial price, they often end up being more expensive in the long run, due to inevitable repairs and maintenance. Here are just a few reasons why dentures are far inferior compared to full arch dental implants and other fixed implant options:

Shifting

Dentures inevitably move, shift and wear out over time, requiring extensive (and costly) repairs and maintenance
1

Pain

Dentures often rub on the gums, frequently leading to painful sores and infection
2

Aesthetic & Functionality

Dentures do not possess the look and feel of natural teeth, which often make simple functions like eating and talking difficult
3

Maintenance

Dentures have to be removed daily and soaked/cleaned in a sanitary solution
