Importance of General Dentistry
You’ve no doubt heard that having your teeth cleaned and examined by a dentist is necessary. Most people don’t know why. A clean, healthy mouth contributes to good overall health. When bacteria accumulate in your mouth, they can use that as a base from which to colonize the rest of your body, leading to serious illnesses. They can move to your lungs, causing pneumonia. They can move to your heart, causing heart disease such as endocarditis and coronary artery disease. And they can move into your sinuses, then your brain, causing an acute infection and death.
Your at-home dental hygiene routine is important for daily maintenance, but a professional cleaning by one of our experienced dentists can remove all of the plaque and buildup your daily routine misses.
The focus of general dentistry is preventative, but prevention may not always be possible. In addition to professional cleanings, your biannual visits to our office will include a thorough external and internal examination of your teeth, gums, and jaw. In this way we can detect tooth decay as well as early warning signs of gum disease, oral cancers, and disorders such as TMD. When detected early, our general dentists can often provide treatment to that will minimize the systemic consequences of these disorders.
