Are You a Candidate for Dental Implants?

All-on-4 implant dentures are supported by dental implants, so we have to make sure that you are a good candidate. Ideally you should:

  • Have good oral health
  • Be in good health for surgery
  • Not be taking medications that impair healing
  • Be a nonsmoker

Oral health problems that threaten natural teeth can also threaten dental implants. If you currently have gum disease or have had gum disease in the past, it puts your implants at risk. We can treat gum disease and watch for its return, but we need to be aware of the risk. We also need to know if you have health conditions that may impact your oral health, such as diabetes. Recent or impending radiation therapy for the jaw mean you cannot receive dental implants.

Talk to your doctor about your overall health. If you’re in good health, then you can get dental implants. Age is never a barrier to dental implant surgery if you are healthy.

Some medications can interfere with dental implant healing. The most common concerns are antidepressants and osteoporosis medications known as bisphosphonates. Antidepressants may increase your risk of dental implant failure by six times or more. Some bisphosphonates can cause a rare condition in which your jawbone may die around the implants, but this is normally associated with strong versions that are less commonly used.

Smoking can increase your risk of dental implant failure by three times or more. It’s best to quit altogether, but if you can quit for the time of the procedure and healing, that may be acceptable.

Why All-on-4 Might Be Best for You

If you are a candidate for dental implants, you have many options. But All-on-4 is a better option for some people. You may benefit from All-on-4 if:

  • You are tired of loose dentures
  • You have been told you need a bone graft
  • You want to have teeth in one day
  • You are looking for a cost-effective implant treatment
  • You are facing the loss of all your teeth at once

People who have been living with dentures are great candidates for All-on-4 implant dentures. The functionality is a great improvement over traditional dentures, as is the appearance. And since you’re already wearing full dentures, there’s no need to extract teeth.

Bone grafts are good procedures, but All-on-4 is designed to make them unnecessary, saving you the time and expense.

If you’re unhappy with the prospect of having to wait a long time to get your replacement teeth, then All-on-4 is ideal for you. The All-on-4 procedure is designed so that most candidates will get dentures that are attached to your implants on the same day you have your teeth extracted and/or implants placed.

Compared to other dental implant procedures, All-on-4 is a cost-effective approach. Never choose a procedure based on cost alone, but the reduced cost in this case is good.

Cost is an especially important factor if you’re facing the loss of all of your teeth at once, when it can be expensive to get replacements. This may be related to jaw trauma, oral disease, or a collapsed bite. All-on-4 can help ease the cost and get you quality results at the same time.
